Website analytics: the numbers that actually matter
Analytics can overwhelm you with numbers that don't change any decision. For most small businesses, a handful of metrics tell you almost everything you need to know.
The ones worth watching
- Leads and conversions — calls, forms, bookings (the real goal).
- Traffic sources — where visitors come from (search, social, referral).
- Top pages — what content actually pulls people in.
- Core Web Vitals — whether the site is fast enough.
Ignore the vanity metrics
Raw pageviews and bounce rate in isolation rarely change what you do. Focus on whether visitors are turning into customers, and where the good ones come from.
Measure with consent
Use privacy-respecting analytics and honour cookie consent. You can learn what you need without compromising your visitors' trust.
