Pillar pages and topic clusters explained
A topic cluster is a way of organizing content: one broad 'pillar' page on a main topic, surrounded by 'cluster' posts covering specific sub-topics, all linked together. It's one of the most effective content structures for SEO.
How it works
- The pillar page broadly covers a big topic (e.g. 'small business websites').
- Cluster posts each go deep on one sub-topic (cost, ownership, hosting).
- Every cluster links to the pillar, and the pillar links back.
Why it builds authority
This structure signals to search engines that you cover a topic thoroughly, and it concentrates internal-link value around your most important pages. It's how a site earns topical authority rather than a scatter of unconnected posts.
