Designing for touch: mobile tap targets and gestures
Most of your visitors use a finger, not a mouse — and fingers are bigger and less precise than a cursor. Designing for touch is a core part of a good mobile experience.
Touch design essentials
- Make tap targets big enough (buttons, links) — no tiny targets.
- Space interactive elements so people don't mis-tap.
- Put key actions within thumb's reach.
- Don't rely on hover — it doesn't exist on touch.
Test with your thumb
Use your own site one-handed on a phone. If buttons are hard to hit or too close together, so will your customers find them. Comfortable touch design quietly lifts mobile conversions.
