Flat monthly website vs. a big upfront agency bill: which is right for you?
For years, getting a real custom website meant one thing: a large upfront invoice, often $5,000 to $15,000, before you'd seen a single result. That model still exists, and for some businesses it's the right call. But it's no longer the only option.
The upfront agency model
You pay a big fee once, get a site, and then… you're mostly on your own. Updates cost extra, hosting is your problem, and the relationship often ends at launch — right when you need help the most.
The flat monthly model
Instead of a lump sum, you pay a predictable monthly fee that bundles design, hosting, security, and ongoing updates. There's no huge barrier to start, and someone is always responsible for keeping your site healthy.
How to choose
- Choose upfront if you have capital ready and an in-house team to maintain the site afterward.
- Choose monthly if you'd rather preserve cash, avoid maintenance headaches, and have ongoing support.
- Either way, insist on owning your site, domain, and content.
The worst option is a site nobody maintains. Whichever model you pick, make sure updates and support are part of the plan.
