Redirects explained: 301 vs 302 and when to use them

A redirect automatically sends someone from one web address to another. They're essential when URLs change — and getting them right protects the SEO you've already earned.

301 vs 302

  • A 301 is a permanent redirect — use it when a page has moved for good. It passes SEO value to the new URL.
  • A 302 is temporary — use it when a page will return. It doesn't pass value the same way.

Where they matter most

The classic case is a website redesign: every old URL should 301-redirect to its new equivalent so you don't lose rankings or send visitors to dead pages. Missing redirects are one of the most common ways a redesign tanks traffic.
