Exit-intent popups: should you use them?
An exit-intent popup appears when a visitor looks about to leave — often offering a discount or a lead magnet. Used thoughtfully they can recover otherwise-lost visitors; used carelessly they irritate people and hurt your brand.
When they can work
- Offering something genuinely valuable (a real discount, a useful guide).
- On pages where you're clearly losing people.
- Sparingly, and easy to dismiss.
When to skip them
If the popup is intrusive, hard to close, or offers nothing worthwhile, it does more harm than good — and aggressive popups can hurt mobile experience and rankings. If in doubt, improve the page itself first.
