Designing for colour blindness and low vision

A meaningful share of people — especially men — have some form of colour vision deficiency, and many more have low vision. Designing with them in mind makes your site work for more customers and is simply good practice.

Practical steps

  • Don't rely on colour alone to convey meaning (add labels or icons).
  • Ensure strong contrast between text and background.
  • Make links distinguishable beyond just colour.
  • Use larger, readable text.

A quick test

View your site in greyscale — if you can still understand everything and tell what's clickable, you're on the right track. These same habits improve readability for everyone, in bright sunlight or on a poor screen.
