What is a 404 page (and how to make a good one)?
A 404 error appears when someone lands on a page that doesn't exist — a mistyped URL or a broken link. It's going to happen sometimes; the question is whether it loses the visitor or keeps them.
What a good 404 page does
- Clearly says the page wasn't found, without blaming the visitor.
- Keeps your normal navigation so they can find their way.
- Offers helpful links — home, popular pages, contact.
- Stays on-brand instead of a scary error screen.
Also: fix the broken links
A good 404 is a safety net, not a fix. Periodically check for and repair broken internal links so people rarely hit it in the first place.
