What is keyword cannibalization (and how to fix it)?
Keyword cannibalization happens when multiple pages on your site target the same keyword, so they compete with each other — confusing Google about which to rank and weakening both. It's a common, fixable issue as sites grow.
How to spot it
- Several pages targeting nearly identical keywords.
- Pages that swap positions in search for the same term.
- Thin, overlapping content on a similar topic.
How to fix it
Consolidate overlapping pages into one strong page (with a redirect), or differentiate them clearly so each targets a distinct intent. Clear one-page-per-topic structure prevents the problem in the first place.
