How to use gradients well in web design
Gradients — smooth transitions between colours — can add depth, warmth, and modern energy to a design. Overused or clashing, they look dated and cheap. The difference is restraint and intention.
Using gradients well
- Keep them subtle — a gentle shift usually beats a harsh one.
- Use colours close in hue for a smooth, natural blend.
- Ensure text on a gradient still has enough contrast.
- Use them purposefully, not everywhere.
Support, don't shout
The best gradients support the design quietly — a soft background, a subtle button accent — rather than dominating it. Used with restraint, they add polish; overused, they undermine it.
