Duplicate content: what it is and how to avoid it

Duplicate content means the same or very similar text appearing on multiple pages or sites. It rarely earns a 'penalty', but it does confuse search engines about which page to rank — and that can hold your visibility back.

Where it sneaks in

  • Near-identical location or service pages (find-and-replace).
  • The same product descriptions copied across pages.
  • The site loading at multiple URLs (with/without www, http/https).

How to avoid it

Make each page genuinely distinct and useful, use canonical tags to point to the preferred version, and keep one consistent URL structure. If you build location pages, make each one truly different — not a template with the city swapped.
